Academic Earth

Here is a great resource. Academic Earth is a collaboration between Berkeley, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, UCLA and Yale that provides full video courses and lectures for free. There are video lectures that cover both US and World History, as well as Political Science/Government. I'm planning on using these in my AP World History class as enrichment material that students can access from home.

Real Player

This is a follow up on the earlier post about embedding videos into a PowerPoint - if you use the new version of Real Player, it will allow you to download videos from sites like YouTube (or any other website that streams video). Real Player has a pop-up button that makes it very easy to download with one click - it's a neat feature that allows you to save videos from the web, especially since sites like YouTube are blocked by most filtering software in the schools. If you don't have Real Player, you can go here to see how to convert a youtube.com video.

How Stuff Works

Hi everyone! I am a new poster here. A little about myself, I am a teacher in Nebraska, but moving to South Dakota. I love using technology in my classroom when it benefits students. I hope you all can take the ideas I post to some good use in your classroom!

How Stuff Works

This site has a lot of great uses for history. The page linked has a video explanation of how the steam engine actually worked during the Industrial Revolution. For students that need to not just hear that a machine was used in history, seeing how it worked could make the difference in determining relevance.

Glencoe Videos
Glencoe is definitely ahead of the curve when it comes to online ancillaries and seem ready for the change over to having kids only use laptops (yes we will get there one day!). If you go here, you can get videos for every section of world history from the dawn of civilization through today. Each section is broken up into a few short videos and can be linked to a Power Point or if you are there a way to have the students view them on their own.

Annenberg Videos
Wow. Talk about great videos. Annenberg has used some of its considerable funds to come up with such videos titles as "The Spread of Religions," "Connections Across Lands" (which looks at the Silk Road), "Early Empires" (Mongols), "Colonial Indentities" and more. There are other world history related topics here which you can click on to get more videos. Once you get to the video page you will have to sign up for a free password. (picture from learner.org)

The History Channel Videos
One of the people we have to teach about in WHII (Renaissance to Present) is Miguel Hidalgo. If you click here, you will see a short video on him. There are many others and they keep changing.
